McDreamy may be dead, but McAllen just got a promotion!  Debbie Allen’s role on Shonda Rhimes’Grey’s Anatomy” has been expanded in a significant way.

The celebrated actress/choreographer will serve as executive producer and director of medical drama’s upcoming 12th season.  Though the show has not been officially renewed for season 12 by ABC, the offer to Allen is clearly a sign the series will return.

The 65-year-old former star of “Fame” first directed “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2010 and oversaw three episodes that year. The directing turn led to a recurring role on the series as Dr. Catherine Avery, mother of Jackson Avery (played by Jesse Williams).  She will continue to play that character even with her expanded role on the show.

Allen then landed directing work on Rhimes’ other dramas “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder;” as well as directing CW’s “Jane the Virgin” and the season finale of Fox’s mega-hit series “Empire.”

The Broadway-bred talent, who directed a whopping 83 episodes of the groundbreaking sitcom “A Different World,” is currently in Atlanta directing an episode of the Starz hit sitcom, “Survivor’s Remorse.”
