J Rome, a full-time student from Laurel, Maryland, won the fan vote and was declared the champion of the first season of ABC’s “Duets.”
The music competition series featured contestants vying for a recording contract with Hollywood Records based off performances with their mentors and duet partners, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke.
Rome was a member of Nettles’ team and before his name was called, he said he thought a win would “completely change my life. I wouldn’t be poor.”
After hearing show host Quddus announce: “The “Duets” champion is … J Rome,” the 25-year-old singer celebrated his victory by performing the Stevie Wonder classic, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.”
J Rome, a YouTube sensation before competing on the show, was a frontrunner for the entire season of “Duets” consistently shining during performances of songs like Sugarland’s “Tonight,” Laura Branigan’s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” among other tunes.
“I’m grateful to Jennifer for everything,” Rome said of his mentor.
