Retired NFL star Michael Strahan will apparently join Kelly Pipa as her new co-host on “Live with Kelly” beginning on Sept. 4.
According to Broadcasting & Cable, multiple sources have confirmed to them that the former New York Giant star will be revealed as the permanent replacement to Regis Philbin when the show returns from summer hiatus.
Philbin, who began co-hosting the show as a local show in New York City back in 1983, left “Live” on Nov. 18, 2011 after 29 years.
Strahan first guest-hosted on “Live with Regis & Kelly” on Oct. 1, 2010 for the vacationing Philbin. He was booked numerous times after that to sub for Philbin as well.
Since Philbin’s departure last fall, the 40-year-old former NFL defensive end competed against 59 other guest slots for the gig. Among the other people who were considered top contenders for the hosting job were singer Josh Groban and comedian Seth Meyers.
It is expected that Strahan will continue to work as a football analyst for Fox NFL Sunday despite his new position at Ripa’s sidekick.
Fox’s NFL studio is located in Los Angeles and “Live” broadcasts from New York City, so Strahan would likely have to take overnight flights to make it work.
Strahan is currently engaged to “Hollywood Exes” star Nicole Murphy, ex-wife of actor/comedian Eddie Murphy.
