Bet On Black: African American Shows Boost Oprah’s OWN Ratings

There’s Black Entertainment Television (BET), TV One and now, there’s apparently Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network!

The TV titan’s television network posted double-digit gains for the month of October, the channel’s ninth consecutive month of growth, across all key demographics in both primetime and total day versus year ago numbers.

Winfrey’s ratings upswing has a lot to do with the newly launched “Iyanla, Fix My Life” and “Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s.”

“Iyanla, Fix My Life” is hosted by motivational guru and life coach Iyanla Vanzant. The show, which featured Vanzant helping “Basketball Wives” star Evelyn Lozada in the series premiere, is the second most-watched show on the network, averaging 742,000 viewers.

Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s,” a reality series set in a St. Louis soul food chain, is in its third season and is up a staggering 152% over the time frame last year with an averaged 734,000 total viewers.

Winfrey’s own “Next Chapter” interview show is the most-watched show on the network, with an averaged 867,000 viewers. The billionaire mogul has landed exclusive interviews with folks like Usher, The Kardashians, Jennifer Hudson, Sean Penn, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber, among others.

Another strong showing for OWN is “Oprah’s Lifeclass.” The faith-based spiritual awareness series features appearances by religious and motivational speakers like Vanzant, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Pastor Joel Osteen, Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra. The series has been averaging about 612,000 viewers.

OWN will launch two new Black-themed reality series in 2013 — “Life With La Toya” starring La Toya Jackson and a family effort titled “Meet the 6 Little McGhees.” previously reported that Winfrey has also partnered with her friend, Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry who will create two original scripted series for OWN.

just fox did, just like wb did, just like upn did, just like ‘the oprah winfrey show’ did, oprah will start with us african american viewers then she will abandon us. fox did it(remember we had to fight for ROC to be renewed). wb did it. upn did it. oprah did it.

and oprah will do it again. once her ratings go from low 742,000 to 3mill, 5mill like her broadcast show, she will abandon us and return to catering to wealthy anglo ladies.

    why arent african americans valued?
