BET has announced that the long-running dramedy “The Game” will end after season nine.
Earlier this year, BET revealed it would renew “The Game” for an eighth season. Now, the network has disclosed that the show will wrap after season nine.
Production is already underway for both season eight and nine. Season eight will premiere on BET in early 2015.
“All good things must come to an end and after celebrating four successful seasons of The Game on BET, the Network has announced production is underway on the show’s final two seasons,” BET said in a statement. “In January 2011 the cult following of The Game proved that the show was a fan favorite with 7.7 million viewers for its premiere debut on BET. With seasons eight and nine, we’re excited to end on a high note by giving Sabers fans a chance to bid farewell to their favorite players on and off the field.”
BET acquired “The Game” after the series was cancelled by The CW network after three seasons in 2009. Then a sitcom, the show developed a cult following that launched a huge online campaign to save the show.
In 2011, BET picked up the show and scored record-breaking ratings with its debut on the cable channel.
The show’s creator and executive producer Mara Brock Akil told BET that she was proud of the journey “The Game” has had.
“Shows do end; that is a part the business,” she said. “I’m very happy BET gave The Game five additional seasons to explore these characters and this world. We made history when we got to the network and it’s nice to be able to celebrate the great achievements of the show.”
“The Game” made headlines in 2012 because of controversial cast changes. Pooch Hall and Tia Mowry who played the lead characters Melanie and Derwin left the series after rumors of failed contract negotiations.
Mowry did an interview with radio host DeDe McGuire declaring she had been “fired” from the show. Hall booked a new Showtime series “Ray Donovan” and attempted to work out an arrangement to work on “The Game” part time. When BET decided against it, he criticized the show on social media.
Actors Jay Ellis and Lauren London joined the series in 2012 as the new characters Bryce “Blueprint” Westbrook and Keira Whitaker. They worked alongside original cast member Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez and Coby Bell.
Earlier this year during season seven, Brittany Daniel who departed the show after season four also returned. R&B singer Brandy also joined the cast as a series regular for season five.
