Nearly Bankrupt & Headed For Divorce: Ginuwine Addresses Troubled Times

R&B singer Ginuwine is dealing with some troubled times.  According to court documents, the singer (real name Elgin Baylor Lumpkin) owes the government $300,000 in back income taxes.  His attorney said he’s close to filing bankruptcy.

Ginuwine’s financial status was disclosed as part of a pretrial hearing because of a lawsuit filed by the executive producer of the singer’s 1996 debut CD, “The Bachelor.” Robert Reives claims he is owed royalties from a $1.25 million five-album deal Ginuwine signed with Sony, and seeks as much as $250,000.

Ginuwine contends that Reives’ claim is outside the statute of limitations, and that he isn’t owed anything. The two will face off in a New York Federal Court on Monday.

Also disclosed in the court documents is that Brandywine, Maryland resident is headed for divorce with his wife, former rapper Solé (real name: Tonya M. Johnston).  The couple wed back in 2003 and has been together 11 years.

Ginuwine and Solé have two daughters together, and the ‘Pony’ singer has four additional children with three other women.  Additionally, Ginuwine considered his wife’s two daughters from her previously relationship his own, so he usually says he has eight children overall.

Ginuwine’s financial struggles had some media outlets reporting that Ginuwine had money problems due to his divorce with Solé, but the singer penned an open letter to fans clarifying things.

He wrote: “I need to address yesterday’s rumor because it is not totally accurate and I don’t want my wife being made out to be the bad guy here. We are NOT yet divorced, but we ARE currently separated and working towards coming to our own agreement, without lawyers, to amicably and fairly divorce. We’ve kept it quiet because it is really no ones business but ours and our family’s. Therefore, reports that she left me “broke” are untrue. She has been a good wife and mother and my poor choices and actions over many years have lead to this. I am on a path of becoming a better man and part of that is taking responsibility for my own choices and behavior in life, so that’s what I’m doing by releasing this statement. I thank everyone who has been there for us through these trying times. You are appreciated. God bless.”

Ginuwine last recorded as part of the R&B trio TGT, made up of himself, Tank and Tyrese.  The debut, “Three Kings” was released in 2013.

In 2011, the singer dropped two solo CDs, “Elgin” and “A Ginuwine Christmas.”

The singer will appear in the forthcoming film “Chocolate City,” an urban version of “Magic Mike” that has Ginuwine returning to his adult entertainment roots.
