Deal Done: Love Story About The Obama’s Lands A Studio
The film “Southside With You” has been acquired by Miramax and Roadside Attractions for North American rights, AlwaysAList.com has confirmed.
The movie chronicles the first date of future President of the United States, Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson based on factual events known about the first couple’s life.
“Southside With You” shows Harvard Law associate Obama ask out Robinson, an attorney from the prestigious corporate law firm where they both worked.
On the historic date in the summer of 1989, the two talk about politics and activism after he famously arrived to pick her up in a beat-up old car with a hole in the floor. The evening also included them watching Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing.”

“Southside With You” stars Tika Sumpter and actor Parker Sawyers (“Zero Dark Thirty”), who was cast after a nationwide search. TV and film veteran Vanessa Bell Calloway also stars in the film.
Richard Tanne wrote and directed the film, which premiered early this year at Sundance Film Festival.
Though the movie did not land a studio deal at Sundance, its deal with Miramax and Roadside Attractions happened in Berlin at the European Film Market. IM Global, which financed and produced the film, inked the North American deal while selling the movie’s international rights.
Sumpter—star of the film “Ride Along 2” and OWN Network’s “The Have and The Have Nots”—is also an executive producer of the film, alongside IM Global, Tanne and a long list of people including John Legend. The Oscar and Grammy winning entertainer also produced and sings the end title song in the film called “Start.”
“Southside With You” is set to hit theaters during the summer of 2016.
