Dwyane Wade: Launches Wine Label & Partners With Wife Gabrielle Union For HGTV Series

NBA superstar Dwayne Wade continues to expand his enterprise outside the NBA.

The Miami Heats shooting guard already has a shoe line (Way of Wade Basketball Shoes by Li-Ning), has a brand of socks (Wade by Stance Socks), and he is Creative Director and spokesmodel for Naked Underwear.

Now, the fashion-forward sports star is expanding into the wine business and has partnered with his wife, Gabrielle Union for a home renovation series for HGTV.

Dwyane Wade on Wine Enthusiast magazineThe 34-year-old NBA all-star appears on the May cover of Wine Enthusiast magazine and in the interview discusses how he grew to develop an appreciation for wine despite watching his parents battle substance abuse.

“That’s what’s crazy about growing up the way I did; I watched my mom and dad abuse drugs and alcohol, and it pushed me away from it. I didn’t drink anything. I wasn’t into it. It always turned out bad. As I started getting older, into my late 20s, I started understanding that alcohol was how you use it. So I started liking drinking wine. I liked what wine stood for at dinner parties and how it was a conversation piece,” he told the magazine.

Now the athlete has launched his own label Wade Cellars and his first offering from Wade Wines is a 2013 red wine blend called Three By Wade (price $105).

The Chicago native was inspired to launch the wine brand after he and wife took a trip to Napa Valley, Calif.

“First was getting down to experience Napa Valley. It was my first time there when my wife and I met with the Pahlmeyer family, and had this conversation about starting this wine. Then it was going out and drinking every wine we could find. We also had the opportunity to spend time with the Pahlmeyer family, go into the vineyard and learn from Jayson about how they make their wines, what years are the best. We were also able to walk through the vineyards and pick some grapes, touching and feeling the project,” she said.

His Wade Wines originally launched in China, the origin of the NBA star’s shoe line, but he’s already started the rollout process here in the U.S. as well.

“We didn’t expect it to happen this fast, and when we released our first wine in China, we got calls from the U.S. asking, ‘What about us?’ So far, we’ve started slowly with an online presence, so you can order wine through my Web site, Hopefully we do way more than we’ve done now, but we have to make sure we do it the right way,” he shared.

HGTVIn addition to his venture into wine, Wade and his wife will star in a new series for HGTV showing the couple flipping houses in Florida.

The idea for Wade and the “Being Mary Jane” star to do the series on HGTV came from their love of the Scripps Network channel.

The official of name of the show is not yet determined, however the series is slated to premiere later in 2016.
