La’Porsha Power: “American Idol” Runner-Up Signed To Legendary Record Label

Many fans of “American Idol” were disappointed season 15 favorite La’Porsha Renae didn’t take home the top prize when the Fox competition aired its final episode on Thursday, April 7.

Renae placed second to country singer Trent Harmon, who won “American Idol” in an upset victory.

MotownDespite her loss, “American Idol” has secured a recording contract for the 22-year-old vocalist through a venture with its partners, 19 Entertainment and Big Machine Label Group.

Renae will record for Motown Records, joining a roster of artists that include Ne-Yo, Erykah Badu, Kem, BJ the Chicago Kid and India.Arie, among others.

“Because of the overwhelming fan demand and success of the farewell season of American Idol, we have made the decision to sign both the winner, Trent Harmon, and runner-up, La’Porsha Renae, to exclusive recording agreements,” Big Machine Label Group founder and CEO Scott Borchetta told Billboard. “I can’t think of a better way to bring this American institution to a close. Everyone at the Big Machine Label Group, the Universal Music Group and Motown Records are so thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait to get to work.”

Hailing from McComb, Mississippi—also the hometown of R&B stars Brandy and Ray J—the divorced, mother of one struck a chord with “Idol” viewers with her heartfelt performances and touching story of overcoming domestic violence.

Renae will begin recording her album under the direction of Motown Records’ President Ethiopia Habtemariam. No target release date has been set.
