Compact Cool: The 2018 Mazda3 Grand Touring Offers More Than It’s Size

The weather in Washington, DC had been about as temperamental as the climate amongst political types making policy during my time in the 2018 Mazda3 Grand Touring (five door model). Just days after getting the vehicle for a seven day loan, the weather went from being 65 degrees and feeling like spring, to dropping down to the mid 40’s and us getting our first snow storm of the season. It was a crazy few days.

But I have to say that took the Mazda3 Grand Touring for a spin in the inclement weather and it stood up to the test. The drive was extremely solid and bright, as the vehicle gripped the road, had me feeling safe and moved around as though an inch of snow wasn’t on the ground.

The snow didn’t stick around, but I was glad I had it for half a day to really get a true feel for this small-sized crossover from Mazda.

The Mazda3 is an attractive car. It has an engaging body style that doesn’t loose any design elements due to its hatchback door.

This car may be one of Mazda’s smaller vehicles, but because this brand focuses on quality and not quantity the attention to detail in its offerings make it seem larger than it is. Amenities like the seat warmers and steering wheel warmers; as well as it’s user-friendly control console and menu functions for the car; they all make this whip seem like you get more than you bargained for.

Overall, the interior is thoughtfully-designed, well-executed and offers lots of features one would expect on upgraded models.

Now LED headlights are standard on the Grand Touring, another added perk.

Gas mileage is strong, earning you 25 city miles per gallon and 33 on the highway.

Mazda plays great emphasis on its safety features and the crash test scores for this car are top of the line. While I appreciate Mazda’s commitment to safe driving, some of the safety offerings are a bit overzealous like your inability to have your passenger make navigation and entertainment changes on the main infotainment screen when the car is in motion.

Favorite Features: Interior cabin and abundance of amenities

Least Favorite Features: Lack of cargo space in its class and the hard to manipulate safety controls

Spin Control: With a ticket price that ranges from $19,345 – $24,945, this car really is a bargain.
