Rugged Ready: The 2019 Lexus GX 460 Luxury Does High-End & Off-Road

I landed at Dulles Airport in Washington, DC and the 2019 Lexus GX 460 Luxury was there waiting on me.

A great first impression for me with a car is how comfortable I am in it after flying in from somewhere and eager to get home.

Of course, my first impression of the 2019 Lexus GX 460 Luxury was a favorable one. It’s an SUV with offroad capabilities and luxury features. I guess we could call it sophisticated and rugged-ready.

The drive home was smooth, acceleration was solid on the highway and talking on my phone through the vehicle was seamless.

Now there was a hiccup once I arrived at my home. The backdoor sensor wouldn’t read that the door was closed and that wouldn’t allow me to shut down the car. It was quite the ordeal, one that lasted more than 15 minutes, and not even a call to the Lexus customer service line could help identify what it was.

In the end, after frustration had definitely set in, a good slam of the door for what had to have been my fifth or sixth attempt got the sensor to connect and I was able to shut the truck down and go in my house.

Some would call that a compromised first impression, but maybe my 40 minute drive home was so favorable prior to that this incident didn’t completely cancel my positive thoughts of the truck.

But the 2019 of this SUV offers impressive off-road capability and a new off-road package.

There are newly standard driving aides, safety features and on the exterior of the car there’s a new spindle grille and headlight design.

You clearly don’t get this truck for fuel economy, as you’re only getting 15 miles per gallon in the city and 18 mpg’s on the highway.

You, however, get great cargo in this SUV, with the ability to sit seven people. You can also drop that second row for extended cargo space, as with that row up you only get a very narrow trunk area.

This SUV is a Lexus, so it’s already an elevated product. But even the finer things in life could use some tweaking.

Favorite Features: High positioning of the seats

Least Favorite Feature: Rear door

Spin Control: With a starting price tag at from $52,505, this pricey SUV is perfect for the person seeking a higher-end SUV that has offroad durability.

Status: B- LIST
