Jennifer Hudson: Says She Has Forgiven Her Family Murderer
The 30-year-old entertainer discussed her various business ventures, but opened up in detail about her feelings regarding her former brother-in-law William Balfour, who was sentenced to three life sentences for killing Hudson’s mother Darnell Donerson, brother Jason Hudson and seven-year-old nephew Julian King.
The “Dreamgirls” star showed tremendous compassion in the one-hour interview with the talk show titan, revealing she has forgiven Balfour for the murders and understands why he was troubled.
“Have you forgiven him?” asked Winfrey, as they sat in the living room of Hudson’s Chicago apartment.
“Yes,” Hudson replied. “For the most part it was not his fault. Like, it’s what he was taught and how he was brought up. We tried to offer love, but he was so far gone that he couldn’t even see that. A lot of things came out about his upbringing that we didn’t even know about. He never had a chance.”
Winfrey: “He was a tragedy in the making!”
Hudson: “Right, how could your heart not go out to that?”
Winfrey: “But still responsible for what he did!”
Hudson: “Very responsible! I’m not letting him off the hook for anything!’
The mother-of-one believes that if Balfour would have grown up in a different family environment, maybe his life would have turned out better.
“Had you had the love my mother gave us, or the background…that some have, then you would’ve stood a chance,” she said.
Hudson also shared that immediately after learning of the murders, she knew instantly that Balfour was responsible for them.
During the “Next Chapter” interview, Winfrey also chats with Hudson’s fiancé David Otunga—who talks about his career as a professional wrestler and liking her with more curves—and her sister Julia, who talks about feeling responsible for what happened to her family.
