Off The Hook: Elmo’s Kevin Clash Accuser Recants

Kevin Clash—the puppeteer behind Elmo—is “relieved” that the accusations of him having a sexual relationship with a teenage boy have been dropped!

Clash’s accuser has officially recanted his initial claims, which he made to “Sesame Street’s” parent company Sesame Workshop this past summer.

“[The accuser] wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship. [The accuser] will have no further comment,” his lawyer, who also represented one of the victims in the Jerry Sandusky case, said in a statement today.

Details as to why the accuser recanted his story were not released.

Clash, 54, who has voiced Elmo since 1985, released a statement as well.

Clash’s employer Sesame Workshop always said they “found the allegation of underage conduct to be unsubstantiated” and that Clash was granted a leave of absence because he wanted “to protect his reputation.”

The voice-over talent spoke to The Hollywood Reporter yesterday about the allegations.

“I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter. I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was,” he told the trade publication.

Clash has won 23 Daytime Emmy Awards for his work as Elmo. In 2011, Clash starred in the documentary “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey,” which made it critically acclaimed debut at the Sundance Film Festival.
