Kym Whitley: Comedienne Gets Real For Oprah’s OWN
The comedic actress will front a show tentatively called “Raising Whitley” that will chronicle her life as a first-time mom.
Whitley adopted her son Joshua—the biological son of the comedienne’s mentee from the Big Sister program who left the child in the hospital maternity ward with only the Hollywood star’s contact information. After getting a call from the hospital telling her, “Your baby is ready for collection,” Whitley solicited her chaotic collective of friends—whom she calls “The Village”—to help her raise the child.
The Shaker Heights, Ohio-bred talent, who has been romantically linked to the rapper Nas and the late R&B singer Gerald Levert, is the voice behind the character Honeybee on the Adult Swim animated series, “Black Dynamite.” She also played the role in the 2009 feature film that the animated series is based on.
Despite appearing on TV shows like NBC’s “Animal Practice,” HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” BET’s “Let’s Stay Together,” and UPN’s “The Parkers,” as well as in films like “Deliver Us From Eva,” “Fun with Dick and Jane,” and “The Perfect Man;” Whitley is still regularly mistaken for actress Jackée Harry. Whitley once played Harry’s twin on an episode of “227.”
