What The Huck: “Scandal” Under Attack

It’s the must-see primetime drama on television and now it’s under attack by the Parents Television Council.

The PTC has berated ABC for the torture scenes in last week’s episode of “Scandal” that the group believes confirms how broken the content-rating system is.

“The brutal nature of that scene, which was rated as appropriate for a 14-year-old child, refutes statements made by an industry claiming to be responsible and concerned about societal violence,” the PTC said in a statement Monday.

On the January 10 episode of “Scandal” did display a content advisory at the beginning of the broadcast. Regardless, the PTC felt the disclaimer wasn’t enough.

In question are the scenes where the character of Huck (played by Guillermo Díaz) is waterboarded for suspicion of attempting to assassinate the President of the United States, Fitzgerald Grant (played by Tony Goldwyn). The PTC described the scenes as “intense, explicit and bloodied!”

“It is sickening just how quickly the entertainment industry was able to move past the tragedy of Newtown and get back to business as usual,” said PTC president Tim Winter.

The PTC made mention of the episode’s timing, as it aired on the same day entertainment industry representatives met with Vice President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss curbing gun violence in the wake of the Newtown school shooting.

The PTC claims they are calling on the President Barack Obama’s administration to get behind an effort for “real responsibility from those who produce and distribute violent media content as well as real reform of the failed TV ratings system.”

The Shonda Rhimes-produced series, which stars Kerry Washington as public relations guru Olivia Pope, scored a ratings high for the second season episode.

Do you think they have a valid concern or are they making a big deal out a storyline that they do not understand?
