The show, which originally starred Esther Rolle, John Amos, Jimmie Walker, Ja’net Dubois, Bern Nadette Stanis, Ralph Carter and Johnny Brown, is being turned into a movie by Sony Pictures and producer Scott Rudin. According to, the studio has tapped writer Phil Johnston to write the script.

“Good Times” was produced by Norman Lear and aired for six seasons on CBS from 1974 to 1979.

The sitcom was set in a Chicago housing project and focused on the working-class couple, James and Florida Evans and their three kids. The family faced significant financial struggles and worked to keep their children from getting into trouble in their dangerous neighborhood.

During the last two season of the show, Janet Jackson (seasons five and six) and Ben Powers (season six) joined the cast.

The movie version of “Good Times” will be set in the 1960’s, which will give the writer of the film a politically-charged period to mine.

Casting has not yet begun on the film. No word on whether the surviving members of the original cast will have any involvement in the movie.
