Whitley Works: Kym Whitley Has A Hit On OWN

The news just keeps better for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network. The ratings growth of the network continued this past weekend with the premiere of comedienne Kym Whitley’s new series, “Raising Whitley.”

The 30-minute reality series, which airs on Saturdays at 10pm ET between “Iyanla: Fix My Life” and “Life With La Toya,” earned 1.2 million viewers for its premiere night.

The strong showing for “Raising Whitley” made it the fifth highest-rated series premiere in the history of the network.

In addition to its high ratings, the series also ranked number one in its time period across all broadcast and cable networks among African-American women 25-54.

“Raising Whitley” chronicles the life of Whitley, a newly adopted mom. The Shaker Heights, Ohio-bred talent adopted her son Joshua—the biological son of the comedienne’s mentee from the Big Sister program who left the child in the hospital maternity ward with only the Hollywood star’s contact information.

After getting a call from the hospital telling her, “Your baby is ready for collection,” Whitley solicited her chaotic collective of friends—whom she calls “The Village”—to help her raise the child.

The ratings on Saturday made OWN’s prime-time lineup number one for the night with all African-American women in all of television across broadcast and cable for the second consecutive week.

Over the past two Saturday nights, OWN was the most-watched network (non-sports) for African-American viewers. OWN also continues to reign supreme in social media for the second week in a row, as Bluefin cited it as the number one most social cable network in prime-time (non-sports) on Saturday.

In other Whitley news, the Hollywood funny woman will appear in an upcoming episode of BET’s “Let’s Stay Together.” She’s had a recurring role on the sitcom since its first season.
