Juanita Bynum: Is She Headed Back To Jail?
By now it’s been widely reported that televangelist Juanita Bynum was jailed in Dallas last week for failure to appear in civil court.
The once renowned international preacher spent the night last Thursday in the Lew Sterrett Justice Center after authorities arrested her on a warrant for her failure to appear in a Dallas civil proceeding against her, according to public records. Bynum was arrested just as she arrived to speak at a conference.
Bynum was ordered in a 2007 judgment to pay $140,000 to ALW Entertainment, the production company owned by sports and entertainment promoter Al Wash. Wash was supposed to promote a play for Bynum and advanced her the initial money up front. She decided she no longer wanted to do the play and failed to return the money.
Court records show that the judge has now given the 54-year-old prophetess 10 days to produce her financial statements to the court. Bynum told the judge that she could make them available in three days. Unfortunately, she has not. Wash has told his attorneys to let her have the additional days the court originally gave her.
If Bynum does not adhere to what the court has asked her to do, she could be arrested and sent to jail again.
The Georgia-based minister is apparently in the process of filing for bankruptcy. Bynum alleges $5 million in debt; however bank statements show that she’s made at least $8 million in deposits. The bankruptcy will not prohibit her from having to repay ALW Entertainment.
Prior to the failed play, Bynum and Wash did work together on his 2005 tour, “Sisters in the Spirit.” The ALW-promoted show featured Bynum performing gospel songs alongside Yolanda Adams, RiZen, Kelly Price, Martha Munizzi, and Sheila E.
Bynum has not released a statement or commented on her arrest and ongoing legal woes.
AlwaysAList.com has also learned that several other entities looking to sue Bynum for outstanding debt have contacted Wash’s attorney to have them handle their cases as well.
