A-List Rides: 2013 Buick Enclave

It debuted as a concept vehicle at the 2006 North American International Auto Show before going on sale in 2008. To kick off its launch in 2008, I traveled with General Motors and the designer of the Buick Enclave, Michael Burton to Las Vegas for an event the embodied the luxury that Buick aimed to capture in this posh crossover vehicle.

After five years of production, I’m amazed that the 2013 Buick Enclave is still going strong while offering the fundamentals of what I grew to love about the vehicle at its inception.

The body of the Enclave is distinctive. Even more distinctive is its beautiful interior, which was restyled along with the dashboard and offers sleek craftsmanship and attention to detail. Embellished with elegant ice-blue ambient lighting, brightly colored new climate controls and real upholstery stitching lends the driving compartment a feeling of premium quality.

While the Enclave did not have an auxiliary USB adapter – unless I just couldn’t find it – it did offer the new Buick IntelliLink system that supports audio streaming of Pandora Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio as well as available Sirius/XM satellite radio.

I drove the Enclave during a blisteringly cold week in December right after Christmas. The heating system was fast and effective, and the defrost cleared the windows in seconds.

The operability of the Enclave is really good. Its acceleration was also pleasantly strong and boasts a 288 horsepower V6 engine. It’s not quite turbocharged, but it gets the job done.

You get plenty of space in the Enclave as well. In addition to an abundance of cargo space that can tow up to 4,500 pounds, there’s easily room for six (maybe seven) adult passengers thanks to the third row seat.

The Enclave is also sturdy, making you feel safe. The vehicle is also equipped with stability control that has anti-rollover logic.

Spin Control: With its sticker price at nearly $51,000, the Buick Enclave is definitely an investment vehicle. The luxury, space and functionality of the automobile does make it an investment worthwhile.

Industry Status: Grade B
