Sharon Jones: Singer Diagnosed With Cancer

Soul singer Sharon Jones has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 57-year-old singer, who performs with her band the Dap-Kings, has early-stage bile duct cancer, according to a statement on the band’s website.

Jones is to undergo surgery and her doctors expect her to make a full recovery. The powerhouse vocalist will undergo a “lengthy” rehabilitation period as well.

“Over the last few weeks I haven’t felt good and I didn’t know what was going on,” Jones said in a statement. “We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it’s operable and curable!”

Bile-duct cancer affects a thin tube that connects the liver to the small intestine. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people are diagnosed with this type of cancer each year in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

Jones & the Dap-Kings are best known for the 2007 song “100 Days, 100 Nights” and 2010′s “I Learned the Hard Way.” The late Amy Winehouse named Jones as one of her music inspirations. She often performed with her band.

The group’s fifth album, “Give the People What They Want,” was scheduled to be released on August 6. The CD will be postponed due to Jones’ medical issue. A new release date has not been announced.

NOOOOOOOOO. I hope it was really found early enough(she says stage 1) that it wont spread to her bones or other parts of her body.
