Mariah Carey: Meet Your New “American Idol” Judge

Following the exit of both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler from the struggling Fox competition series, “American Idol,” it is now confirmed that pop superstar Mariah Carey will join the judges table for a one-year stint.

The announcement was made today by Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly during his executive session at the Television Critics Association summer press tour at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“We do in fact have one judge whose deal closed very, very recently,” said Reilly. “I think it’s the biggest recording artist that any of these shows have ever had. It’s an artist that many contestants have tried to emulate, have tried to sing [her] songs, have tried to hit the notes. Because [the deal] really only concluded hours ago, our new judge couldn’t be with us.”

Carey wasn’t present for the announcement but Reilly telephoned her from his seat on the dais at TCA.

“I am so excited to be joining Idol,” said Carey. “I wish I could be there today. I can’t wait too get started.”

The 42-year-old vocalist is rumored to be getting a $17 million paycheck for her one year on “American Idol.” During a recent red carpet appearance, Carey’s husband Nick Cannon said that he “don’t know if they could afford Mariah Carey.” Apparently he was wrong!

Carey joining the show now has her working alongside her actual manager, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson.

The five-time Grammy Award winner also recently revealed a new single titled “Triumphant.” Carey’s predecessor Lopez used “American Idol” as a launching pad for her new music and current tour with Enrique Iglesias. Looks like the “Vision of Love” singer will likely do the same!
