Stephanie Mills & Mary Mary: Artists Join Stevie Wonder’s Florida Boycott

More artists are pledging their support for Stevie Wonder’s boycott of Florida in the wake of the George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict.

Grammy Award winners Stephanie Mills and Mary Mary have also declared they will boycott The Sunshine State until the Stand Your Ground law is repealed.

Mills spoke to exclusively about her plans to support Wonder’s economic boycott.

Stephanie Mills

“As a parent of a young black male child, it’s a travesty that my child can’t walk the streets now with a hoodie on and not be racially profiled,” Mills told us. “I stand with Stevie Wonder, and I will not be performing in the state of Florida until the Stand Your Ground law is changed.”

Chart-topping Gospel duo Mary Mary, made up of sisters Erica and Tina Campbell, took to Twitter to announce their stance on Florida.

“We will Stand with Stevie Wonder and boycott Florida until the Stand Your Ground law is changed! We love our fans but we must do something,” the sisters wrote, via @TheRealMaryMary. “We understand a ‘no’ from us isn’t as big as a ‘no’ from Stevie Wonder, but if all our voices join together we can really change things!”

Mills and the Mary’s are the first two acts to publicly join Wonder in his campaign to overturn the Stand Your Ground law.

The R&B great announced during a concert in Quebec on Sunday that he would never perform in Florida or any other state that has the law until the law is overturned.

Stevie Wonder

“I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” Wonder told the audience. “As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.”

Economic boycotts by entertainers have worked in the past. In the early 2000’s, Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg and others refused to perform in Cincinnati following an unarmed Black man being killed by police their. The impact of the artists and several major conferences refusing to go to Cincinnati caused the city to cancel their annual jazz festival and caused local laws to change.

While in BOYCOTT MODE, these civic minded rich folk should also boycott Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, etc.!! BOYCOTT everywhere that African Americans (largely African American Males) are murdering each other and anything/anybody else who happens to be there!! BOYCOTT the violent, criminal, misogynous BULLSHIGGETY that passes for Black Music these days!!! BOYCOTT the Supreme Court and Congress so that lawyers can no longer rig juries while hiding behind the “jury of his/her peers” CRAP!! The so-called Hip Hop Rap artists should BOYCOTT themselves cuz half of them have made their fortunes promoting the glorification of GHETTO FABULOSITY, Dope Slinging, Pimping, Profanity, Deliberate Ignorance and all the other things that are major factors in the clock being turned backwards on my people!! And Mr. Wonder … NEGRO PLEASE!!! He KNOWS what time it is!!! He could have been using his influence as one the greatest songwriters/artists in history to turn this music horror around years ago!! But then, he wouldn’t have been invited to Sean Combs White Party or Martha Stewarts Hoedown in the Hamptons or Oprah Winfreys Fine-this-week, Fat-next-week-Social-Soiree-for-people-who-start-Girl-schools in-Africa while all HELL is breaking loose for Black school Girls in your own City/ Country!! I’m pissed now… I’m going to lunch!!
