Wentworth Miller: “Prison Break” Star Comes Out

“Prison Break” star Wentworth Miller has come out of the closet.

The 41-year-old actor came out in a letter to Maria Averbakh, director of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, who had invited him to participate in the festival.

“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” Miller wrote. “However, as a gay man, I must decline. I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”

The biracial actor is making reference to recent anti-LGBT legislation passed by Russia. In June, President Vladimir Putin signed a law bans the “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” and imposes hefty fines for providing information about the gay community to minors or holding gay pride rallies.

“The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

Miller expressed that if the laws change in Russia, he would reconsider his participation in the festival.

“If circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice,” he added.

The British-bred talent’s letter originally appeared on the activist group GLAAD’s website.
