Shopping While Black: Rob Brown Sues NYC Macy’s For Racial Profiling

Actor Robert Brown has just sued Macy’s in NYC for racial profiling.

The star of the TV show “Treme” and the movies “Finding Forester” and “Coach Carter” went public last month with the news that he had been falsely arrested in June at Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square in New York City after hearing about the Black teenage who faced a similar ordeal at Barney’s in New York.

Brown revealed that he went to Macy’s to purchase a watch for his mom’s graduation. After buying the $1,300 Movado timepiece, the 29-year-old star said he started shopping for a pair of sunglasses when he was stopped in the middle of the store by three white men in plain clothes that were NYPD cops.

The actor alleged that the officers began to “publicly and falsely” accuse him of committing credit card fraud. Brown said that he was then cuffed and paraded around the store “like an already convicted common criminal.”

A graduate of Amherst College in Amherst, MA, Brown said he was later put in a police holding cell and berated for an hour.

According to Brown, it was only after the police realized who he was that he was released from custody. The cops tried to make good on the awful ordeal by offering to give the actor a police escort to his mother’s graduation that he barely made.

Brown is filing a class action lawsuit because he believes that racial profiling customers has been a huge problem ongoing for Macy’s.
