Whoopi Goldberg: Acclaimed Comedienne Has Never Hosted “SNL”
Whoopi Goldberg is one of the most successful comediennes in the world and one of only 11 EGOT winners – people who have won an Emmy Award, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
The 58-year-old comic, who has executive produced a new documentary for HBO called “Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley,” has never been asked to host NBC’s long-running sketch comedy series, “Saturday Night Live.”
Goldberg, who currently moderates ABC’s daytime talk show “The View,” has been spoofed on the series by comedian Keenan Thompson but never asked to host.
“Look! These folks are 15 years late on this question,” Goldberg told Showbiz 411. “’Saturday Night Live’ has looked like this for 15, 16 years. I don’t understand? Why is everyone up in arms? Didn’t anybody see it before? Clearly not!”
“SNL” and executive producer Lorne Michaels has come under fire in recent weeks for not having any women of color on its comedy team for a sixth year in a row.
When asked in an interview about the show being devoid of Black women, “SNL’s” Thompson said that find any Black comediennes who are prepared.
“It’s just a tough part of the business,” Thompson said to TV Guide. “Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready.”
