Academy Award nominated director John Singleton has signed on to direct, re-write, and produce the Tupac Shakur biofilm by Morgan Creek Productions and Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films.

The long-discussed film project is about the late rapper (sometimes known as 2Pac) will begin production this summer.

Singleton will work with Ed Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft to revise their original optioned script.

The 46-year-old filmmaker worked with Shakur in his 1993 film “Poetic Justice,” where the rap legend starred opposite Janet Jackson.

“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” said Singleton. “His passing deeply affected my life. As well as countless people in this world … His life story is as important to my generation.”

This film is being done with the blessing of ‘Keep Ya Head Up’ hip-hop star’s mother Afeni Shakur, who will receive an executive producer credit on the film and provide access to the late rapper’s music catalog.

Shakur was an award-winning rapper who starred in films like “Juice,” “Above the Rim” and “Gridlock’d.” The rap star was a fixture in the emphasis East Coast versus West Coast rap wars and was ultimately killed at age 25 in 1996 during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. That murder has gone unsolved.
