Kerry Washington: Publicly Private & Proud About It
COMMENTARY:
Let’s face it, we live in a culture that’s obsessed with knowing every aspect of an entertainer’s life. The digital age has made it so that most fans feel it’s their right to be able to have access to the innermost personal secrets of the celebrities that they love and adore.

Pop superstar Beyoncé has done a great job of shielding the public from private aspects of her life. She shares what she chooses to in a manner that solely benefits her, and what she doesn’t want to share she simply keeps to herself.

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington has taken a page from the Beyoncé playbook.

The 37-year-old actress saw a spike in attention when her groundbreaking role as Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal” became a hit series and a social media phenomenon.

While her TV persona trended constantly on Twitter and provided fodder for kitchen table talk and water cooler conversation, Washington in real life began to work loud and live quietly!

The Bronx, New York-bred star of films like “Ray,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “Django Unchained” and “For Colored Girls” shocked the fans and the industry alike when it was announced she wed NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha in a super-secret ceremony on June 24, 2013 in Hailey, Idaho. More shocking than the wedding was the fact that no one ever knew the couple was dating!

Then Washington got pregnant last fall. While most celebrities post baby bump photos on Instagram or broker some sort of deal with People or Essence magazine for the announcement and the reveal, Washington – a fashion darling known for impeccable style choices – just began wearing clothes that allowed her to keep her pregnancy quiet for as long as she could.

The Emmy nominee has made reference to her obvious baby bump while walking the red carpet at recent award shows and reportedly, is scheduled to give birth at any time now.

Washington also walked the carpet at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon last week and the Essence carpet host asked a pregnancy-related question. “Are you nesting yet?” the reporter inquired.

Without flinching and with a smile on her face, Washington replied: “Anything in that territory of my life I’m going to keep to myself.” The reporter had no choice but to move on.

Though she and her husband attend most high-profile events together, he never walks the red carpet with her and they’re rarely photographed as a couple. People not seeing them “together” has led to tabloid and blog reports with bogus headlines like: “There’s Trouble in Paradise!” and “It’s Over!”

Despite the rumors and false speculation, Washington is unfazed by it all. Why? Because her relationship is not validated by public perception and the need to convince you her private life is in tact.

Washington and her hubby did attend the Vanity Fair Oscar Party after she presented at the Academy Awards on Sunday. The two posed for an intimate photo booth image, a rare gesture for the lovebirds.

Unlike Washington, most women in Hollywood treat their men like the new Louis Vuitton purse, they have to show you that they have one! Actresses and female entertainers often drag their man down the carpet almost like a deer hunter who wants to show you what they just caught in the forest.

More times than not, these women over-sell how “happy” they really are in interviews and can’t seem to answer a single question without making reference to “my man,” “my baby” and “my boo!” I always wonder if they’re trying to convince the public or convince themselves things are good.

So while Washington’s TV character Olivia Pope is known as “a fixer,” maybe her real-life actions will help fix a few relationships instead.

If more people decided to keep some aspect of their real life private and stopped sharing the intimate details of their dating life and marriage with the public, they could possibly remain ‘Drunk in Love’ like Beyoncé and Jay-Z and have the loving discretion of Mr. & Mrs. Asomugha.

Thank you for writing this article. It’s speaks to the truth nature of their marriage. I am tired of people telling vicious and outrageous lies on Kerry and Nnamdi. Let them be happy!! You should be applauded for this article. What they do in their lives is their own damn business.

Loved the article. So true about the ones so eager to talk about their relationship. Is it really as good as they make it out to be? Probably not. None of my business anyway.

Thank you for this article. I admire Kerry so much, it pains me to see some of the comments made about her private life which is nobody’s business. As a fan of the show I am guilty of secretly wishing she was in a real life relationship with Tony Goldwyn because I love the way he treats her and talks about her. I am however able to separate fact from fiction and just enjoy the show and their interaction as a TV couple. Just ignore them Kerry and continue to live your life.
