First Look: Trailer For James Brown Biopic Released

Universal Pictures has released the first official trailer for the James Brown biopic, “Get On Up.”

“42” star Chadwick Boseman plays the Godfather of Soul in the film that chronicles the tumultuous life of the innovative, history-making and often trouble-prone star. “Get On Up” explores the music, moves and moods of Brown, showing the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.

Brown died Christmas Day in 2006. Following his death, his family fought for years over his final resting place.

“Get On Up” is helmed by “The Help’s” Tate Taylor. The film also stars Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, Oscar nominee Viola Davis, Dan Aykroyd, Jill ScottCraig Robinson, Nelsan Ellis, Tika Sumpter, Keith Robinson, New Edition’s Ralph Tresvant, Lennie James and Julius Tennon.

Earlier this year, predicted during an appearance on HLN’s “News Now” that “Get On Up” star Boseman could make the same impact that Jamie Foxx made with “Ray” depending on how “Get On Up” turns out. Early buzz on the film is that his role could be an award show contender.

“Get On Up” hits theaters August 1.
