Merry Clayton: “Twenty Feet From Stardom” Star Injured In Auto Accident

Power vocalist Merry Clayton, who was featured in the Oscar-winning documentary “Twenty Feet From Stardom,” was recently injured in a serious car accident in Los Angeles.

The 65-year-old singer, whose voice is featured on songs by Rolling Stones to Ray Charles, suffered severe injuries according to the artist’s official website.

The full statement read: “It is with deep regret, but also deep gratitude, that we announce the following about our beloved Merry Clayton. At approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, Merry was involved in a major automobile accident in Los Angeles, California. Merry sustained severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities. We are truly grateful that our dear Merry is still with us. She has a long road of recovery ahead and we thank you all for your prayers as we link arms together with faith and the Lord’s strength for her rapid healing. For all that know her personally, and those that have been blessed by her God-given talents, please know that her spirit is very strong and her faith unwavering. Her voice is not silenced and His praises continue to be on her lips.”

No additional details about the accident were disclosed. Clayton’s manager declined to comment on the accident.

Clayton is New Orleans native who became a sought-after backup singer for the likes of Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ringo Starr, Linda Ronstadt and Carole King.

Despite having the greatest success as a background vocalist and session singer, Clayton has released seven studio albums and had several hit singles including ‘Southern Man’ and ‘Gimme Shelter.’

Clayton has seen resurgence with her music career since appearing alongside Darlene Love, Tata Vega, Judith Hill and Lisa Fischer in “Twenty Feet From Stardom.”
