Pure Parody: Darlene McCoy Spoofs Tamela Mann’s “Take Me To The King”

Is singer and radio personality Darlene McCoy the “Weird Al” Yankovic of gospel music? If her parody of Tamela Mann’s hit single, “Take Me To The King” is the answer to that question, then it’s a resounding: “Yes!”

McCoy, host of the mid-day radio program “The Darlene McCoy Show” on Praise 102.5 FM in Atlanta, showcased her own vocal chops on this hilarious spoof of Mann’s gospel hit re-titled, “Take Me To Burger King.”

“Honestly, I was just playing around on-air one day after playing ‘Take Me To The King’ went off and said, ‘That’s the anointed Tamela Mann with ‘Take Me To Burger King!’ Just kidding!’ Well people were calling in all day laughing about that comment so I took the thought on through and recorded the song,” McCoy told AlwaysAList.com about her inspiration to do a comedic remake the song.

Mann’s version of “King,” produced by Kirk Franklin, is the first single from her forthcoming CD, “Best Days.” This marks the first time that Mann, a former member of Kirk Franklin & The Family, has recorded with Franklin since she appeared on his 1998 song “Lean on Me” alongside Mary J. Blige, Bono, R. Kelly and Crystal Lewis. Their latest collaboration, “Take Me To The King,” is currently number two on the Gospel Radio Chart.
